lego camera dolly

In June I discovered James Gurney´s video channel, a brilliant illustrator and painter best known for the Dinotopia books. In one of his videos he showed his camera dolly which he just made out of Lego. Being interested in camera dolly systems myself, I immediately checked my abandoned Lego technic box for useful parts. Nearly everything necessary was there even a motor and battery box. I only had to buy some extra gear-wheels. Im Juni habe ich den Videokanal von James Gurney entdeckt, ein brillianter Illustrator und Maler, der wohl am bekanntesten für seine Dinotopia Buchreihe ist. In einem seiner Videos zeigte er sein Kamera-Dolly-System, welches er lediglich aus Lego gebaut hatte. Da mußte ich natürlich gleich meine alte Lego-Technik-Kiste durchstöbern, um sie nach verwendbaren Teilen zu durchforsten. Neben Motor und Batteriekasten war fast alles Nötige vorhanden. Lediglich ein paar Zahnräder mußte ich noch dazukaufen.

So, in the above clip you can see the whole setup working as well as the resulting time-lapses. To slow down the motor´s speed I had to find an effective combination of gear-wheels and an old tripod head came in handy to mount the camera onto the carriage. Im Clip kann man das ganze Setup im Zusammenspiel sehen, sowie die damit entstandenen Zeitraffer. Um  die Geschwindigkeit des Motors zu verlangsamen, mußte ich eine effektive Zahnradkombination finden und praktischer Weise fand sich ein alter Stativkopf, um die Kamera auf den Wagen zu montieren.

With the VirtualDub plugin Deshaker I could stabilise the footage and smooth out the jitter. I think the quality is quite good considering it is just a carriage pulled by a lego motor. I´m really looking forward to making some time-lapses outdoors. Mit dem VirtualDub-Plugin Deshaker konnte ich die Aufnahmen entwackeln und das leichte Zittern wegbügeln. Unterm Strich finde ich die Qualität recht gut, wenn man bedenkt, daß es nur ein Wagen ist, der von einem Legomotor gezogen wird. Ich bin schon gespannt, auch mal Draußen auf  diese Weise ein paar Zeitraffer zu schießen.
