Terence

I just finished the next caricature, this time it is Terence Hill best known as sidekick of Bud Spencer (see previous blog post). It is funny, now I see the other caricatures I made with different eyes.

Bud

After the experience of the previous caricature (as mentioned before it was the first serious one after quite some time) I worked on Bud Spencer, another "companion" of my childhood. Again, painting digitally I had the freedom to change things drastically as the whole process was improvised - as usual. Using several film stills from a video file helped me to find references for certain sections, as there was not one single image that had every visual information I was looking for. The original idea I had in the beginning I discarded for the lack of reference and there is still room for improvement, but I guess it is better to work on another caricature instead!

Louis

What started as simply trying out painting digitally, evolved into this quite elaborate caricature of Louis De Funès. When I was a teenager there was a time period when I did caricatures quite regularly, but since then more than twenty five years have past. Other interests emerged and with working as an animation artist I probably was artistically absorbed enough. Beside drawing colleagues, I never did serious caricatures, even though the fascination was always there. Now, having done this painting, I feel quite confident to go on and do more. There are some other childhood "heros" I definitely want to do a caricature of. Do you have someone in mind you would like to see?

medallions

Super Sculpey Firm Ø 5,8 cm Info

Last week I made these medallions. Looking for a personal birthday gift I thought I could try to capture my children - from life, what was not that easy. At the end a mix between observation and working from memory did the trick. I always wanted to sculpt a relief like this, it is so close to a coin, what would be also something worth trying out. But this would need much more thinking beforehand. Letzte Woche habe ich diese Medallions modelliert. Da ich wieder einmal auf der Suche nach einem persönlichen Geschenk war, habe ich die Idee aufgegriffen, meine Kinder in Reliefform festzuhalten - was nicht ganz einfach war. Letztendlich hat direkte Beobachtung kombiniert mit aus-dem-Kopf zum obrigen Ergebnis geführt. Gerade die Ähnlichkeit zu einer Münze hat für mich den Reiz ausgemacht, diese würde im Vorhinein aber viel mehr Überlegungen benötigen.

memory

Like last year I was lucky to find an idea for a personal christmas gift. This time it is a Memory game where you can have your own photos printed on and with the well known brand logo it looks like an official item you could buy in a store. It took some thinking which pictures I should use, till I realised the photos from my hometown I uploaded on Instagram would be perfect. When I photograph something I usually tend to focus on details or just sections of the subject, what came in handy for the game's card size. I wonder, if this could be a product sold locally for tourists or people who are also interested in lesser known places of my hometown?

new old tools

Last week I asked at my dentist if they still have some old dentist instruments they might not need anymore. Recently while I did this sculptures I remembered that 30 years ago when my mother used to work as a potter, she had these tools as well. Those tools where lost over time, the happier I was getting "new" ones from my dentist. I am looking forward to use these instruments the next time I am sculpting something new. Letzte Woche beim Zahnarzt hatte ich nachgefragt, ob sie nicht noch altes Besteck hätten, was sie nicht mehr bräuchten - hätte ich fast vergessen. Als ich letztens an diesen Figuren gearbeitet hatte, viel mir wieder ein, daß meine Mutter damals als Keramikerin solche Instrumente auch benutzte. Welche mittlerweile längst verschollen sind, um so mehr habe ich mich über die "neuen" von meinem Zahnarzt gefreut. Mal sehen, wie es sich mit denen beim nächsten Mal modellieren läßt.

new portfolio

I created a new portfolio page, the old one implemented in this blog was a bit limited. Now the appearance is less cluttered and the different areas of animation production have their individual pages. I also wanted to seperate personal stuff from work. Some details are not as I wanted them to be but I am no software engineer, so for now this has to be it. The animation section has some new clips from recent projects. blue eyes

Not a fancy design ... I just was thinking, even after all these years as an animator I never had the chance to animate characters that asked for broader use of squash and stretch, especially in the face. I mean really go for it, everthing is so conservative particularly the german productions. I guess I have to come up with my own project to pursue this kind of animation...
